Leaving Japan

Procedures when leaving Japan

Deletion of Alien Registration Card

Please return your Alien Registration Card to an immigration officer at the port of your departure.

Re-entry permit

If you leave Japan without a re-entry permit, you will automatically lose all your resident rights which were previously given to you through your residents visa. When you then re-enter Japan, you will have to go through the complete immigration and visa application process from the start.

  • Please Note

There are two types of re-entry permits, multiple and single-entry, and you have to apply for these at your local immigration office. With a multiple-re-entry permit you can re-enter Japan any number of times in a designated time period. Therefore, please be sure to choose the correct re-entry permit.

For more information, please refer to the website of Japan's Immigration Office.

Post

Please visit your local post office in charge of your area and submit a change of address notification. Here, you can register for a free 1 year forwarding service. You may want to register a friend living in Japan or your previous place of work, since forwarding to destinations abroad is not possible.

Bulky Garbage

Bulky garbage collected by the waste management office is everything from furniture, household appliances (air conditioners, televisions, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines and dryers are not included) and all items with dimensions of 30cm or more. These objects are not collected by regular garbage trucks. To request this special collection, please contact your local municipal office and be aware that additional costs are required.
For more details, please contact your local waste management center.

Disposing of products under the recycling law

The following 4 categories of products are, under current regulations, required to be recycled: air conditioners, televisions (tube, LCD, plasma), refrigerators and freezers, washing machines and dryers. A collection fee will be required.
You may ask at the store you purchased the product or a retail electronics store, if they would pick it up for you. Alternatively you can check with your local municipal office.

1- Please directly confirm with the store if they are able to collect your appliances.
2- Please inquire directly at your local municipal office if they are able to collect your appliances.

For more information on recycling home appliances, please refer to the Home Appliance Recycling Law website.

  • For disposal of your home computer (PC, monitor, laptop ), please contact the original maker or the PC 3R Promotion Association.

Deletion of car registration and disposal of car

When disposing your car, you can contact the dealer where you purchased your car, or other dealers buying cars. In this case, the dealer would act as an agent. If your address or name has changed during your stay in Japan, you will need to provide additional information such as your Alien Registration Card or the Certificate on Registered Matters. If you are planning to pass your car on to a friend, you will have to file an official change of registration. For information, contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles or get in touch with us, and we can make arrangements for you.
