Yamatane Museum of Art

The Yamatane Museum of Art was established in July 1966 as the first museum specializing in Japanese painting. The main displays of its vast collection consist of pieces that the founder Yamazaki Taneji himself has acquired through direct exchanges with artists under his motto, "paintings are personality", as well as items that have been donated. With a focus on modern and contemporary art, from the Meiji Period until present day, the Yamatane Museum of Art is home to more than 1,800 paintings. The museum’ s collection is not limited to one school of painting or a single artist, but includes a wide variety of works such as woodblock, oil and ancient paintings, including pieces designated as important cultural properties. In order to offer visitors the most extensive view of the collection, they have rotating exhibitions about 6 or 7 times throughout the year, at which the paintings in alignment with a season or a theme on display are changed.
