Moving from Japan

Q
Can a survey or packing/moving be carried out on a weekend or holiday?
A
Yes, moving on weekends or holidays as well as evening surveys on weekdays are all possible. However, these times are usually fully booked quite fast, so make sure to reserve your time well in advance. Also, the following periods tend to be quite busy as well:
  • Last weekend of the month,
  • The weeks running from the end of March to the middle of April (busy with Japanese customers).
  • June to the end of July (busy with foreign customers).

Q
How long does the survey take?
A
It depends on the amount to be shipped. Generally, we aim for 1- 1.5 hours.

Q
Do I do the packing by myself?
A
In order to prevent damage, please leave the packing to us. Also, since we have to create a packing list, if you do pack by yourself, please do not close any boxes.

Q
I am worried about some of my antique furniture. Are you able to handle these as well?
A
At Yamatane, our well experienced packing staff will use a variety of protective materials while packing your belongings, so even in the case of antique furniture, there is no need to worry. For more information, please check the packing materials and method page.

Q
I am worried about the level of moisture inside the container during transit. How do you treat issues such as this?
A

We use high-performance anti-moisture tools such as EX-DRY-SU. Compared to inorganic desiccants (such as Silica Gel), EX-DRY-SU is 5-7 times more effective in absorbing moisture. EX-DRY-SU is a fast and powerful absorber, which especially helps to prevent early stage moisture or rust. It is natural and water soluble and complies with European RoHS and ELV Directives. In other words, it is a high-quality and safe product.

Q
I would like to bring back a number of things I have bought in Japan. What kind of items am I prohibited from taking back with me?
A

The regulations in place in Japan do not differ greatly from those in other countries. There are laws regarding cultural property protection and some products may not be exported. For more details, please refer to the website of the Agency for Cultural Affairs.

Furthermore, there may be restrictions in your country of destination on imports, so please consult with your coordinator beforehand.

Q
How long does it take for delivery to be completed from the day of collection in Japan?
A

This depends on the exact destination, however, you may use the estimates below as guidelines.

By Sea

Asia - 20-30 days
North America - 35-50 days
Europe - 40-50 days

By Air

All destinations - 8-12 days

Note:
Please be aware that these times are estimates and subject to change depending on the country of destination and customs.

Q
I would like to take my pet with me. How should I go about this?
A
Yamatane cannot organize the transport of your pet, but we would be happy to introduce you to cooperating companies specializing in animal transports. Please feel free to ask us about this.

Q
Is it possible to take my car with me?
A
There may be cases in which you cannot take your car with you, depending on import regulations or the type of car, so please consult with your coordinator in advance.

Q
There are items I would like to throw away. Could Yamatane help me with this?
A
Japan has a lot of regulations concerning the disposal of garbage. Bulky and electronic garbage disposal both require fees, and there may be cases when non-certified companies cannot collect your garbage. For more information, please consult with your coordinator.

Q
I have heard that there are certain procedures to disposing of electronic garbage in Japan. Could you tell me more about this?
A

As for home electronics that are eligible for disposable under the recycling law (air conditioners, televisions (tube, LCD, plasma), refrigerators and freezers, washing machines and dryers), collection and transport can only be carried out by electronics shops, or by the local authorities. In the case of PCs, the collection is handled by the manufactures themselves, so please contact these directly. For all other items, please feel free to ask one of our coordinators. For more information on PC recycling, please take a look at the PC3R website.

Q
Do you offer English language support?
A
We have English speaking staff available to assist you throughout your move. From the initial telephone call, through to the survey, sending and aftercare services, you may rest assured that you can contact us at any time in English.
